My mother always tells this story with a baby voice. She’ll say, “I cut a big hole in the bottle nipple, put in grits or cream of wheat. Feed you until your tummy was pushed out. It made you sleep through the night.”
I wish I could mimic the noise she makes when she says this. The best way to describe it is that she does a sound similar to one people do when they make a chef’s kiss.
As a mother, I’d never do this. I breastfed, so I’m not sure there’s a way to overfeed a child. But this essay is not a debate on nursing versus formula versus early feeding of grains.
Instead, this method had a profound effect on how I eat.
